Bangladesh to cap support to religious schools

Bangladesh's interim government has decided to restrict its financial support to madrasahs, unless they have a minimum 30 per cent success rate in public exams.

There are nearly 9,000 government registered madrasahs, and teachers of all such schools are given full salaries from the government.

However, there are other unregistered institutions which do not follow the government approved curriculum. Experts have long been critics of Bangladesh's madrasah education system, saying; large number of students failed to cope in regular society, later on in life.
