Bangladesh: Death of Human Rights

Amid growing accusations of abuses by the Bangladeshi armed forces, the interim administration in Bangladesh is facing severe criticism from the international community on its record on human rights.

During an interview with the ABC, foreign affairs advisor Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury defended these accusations by saying that, "Bangladesh had a better human rights record than many other countries".

However, reports from Bangladesh suggest, the interim administration is keen to overlook any accusations, as it has the support of a minority group of influential Bangladeshis and, foreign diplomats.

Earlier this year, the military backed government came to power through a bloodless coup, which the international community supported, due to the growing corruption and violence by the ruling BNP and the opposition Awami League.
